The comeback
The Z28 returns mid-year — pushed by the Firebird — and Camaro outsells Mustang for the first time.
The Z28 had been dropped after 1974. What brought it back wasn't Camaro demand but Pontiac's Firebird Trans Am, which sold over 46,000 in 1976 while the Camaro had nothing to answer it. Chevrolet reintroduced the Z28 in spring 1977; buyers took 14,349, and — a genuine milestone — Camaro outsold Mustang for the first time.
A battered mid-70s Camaro later became the “before” form of Bumblebee in the 2007 Transformers film.
