T-tops arrive; Type LT bows out on top
T-tops offered on a Camaro for the first time, and the plush Type LT outsells the Z28 in its final year.
1978 offered removable T-tops on a Camaro for the first time — only 9,875 cars got them (Pontiac had already offered them on the Firebird a year or two earlier). Production climbed to 272,631 (36,982 sixes and 235,649 V8s).
The volume story stayed the same as ever: the plush Type LT outsold the Z28 in Type LT's final year, 65,635 to 54,907 — a reminder that Camaro's best-seller was usually the comfortable trim, not the fast one.
