The fifth generation's last model year, and the whole range stayed on sale to the end: the V6 LS and LT, the SS with the LS3 or L99 V8, the supercharged ZL1 and the LS7 Z/28. The Commemorative Edition came on the 2LT and 2SS, with RS content and an Adrenaline Red interior.

Chevrolet noted that fifth-generation sales had passed 400,000 since April 2009. The all-new Alpha-platform car followed for 2016.

  • Motor Trend's January 2015 comparison of the Z/28 with a Porsche 911 GT3 put the Camaro 2.5 seconds behind at Willow Springs, 1:29.72 to 1:27.22, with the 3,882-pound Z/28 weighing 615 pounds more than the Porsche. A retest three months later found a fix that cost $395: a dealer-installed wickerbill on the rear spoiler cut Pobst's lap to 1:28.40, and MT said any Z/28 buyer paying $75,000 should add it.
  • In Motor Trend's October 2014 comparison the Camaro SS 1LE beat the all-new 2015 Mustang GT Performance Pack and the Challenger R/T Scat Pack, and cost about $4,500 less than the optioned-up Mustang as tested. The 1LE ran the magazine's figure-eight in 24.5 seconds, quicker than the new Mustang's 24.7, and MT headlined it 'The Ponycar King.'
  • In March 2015 Chevrolet was about to deliver the 500,000th fifth-generation Camaro in the U.S., with 493,815 delivered through February: 61,648 in 2009, 81,299 in 2010, 88,249 in 2011, 84,391 in 2012, 80,567 in 2013 and 86,297 in 2014, plus 11,364 in early 2015. GM said 2014 was the second-best year of the run and that 63 percent of retail buyers were new to GM.
  • The fourth and final Gen 5 COPO Camaro, again limited to 69 cars, was shown at SEMA in November 2014 in Abalone White with a 350 LSX and a 2.9-liter Whipple supercharger. Chevrolet said it built on Bruno Massel's win at the 2014 Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals, the first NHRA national-event victory for a fifth-generation COPO, alongside seven additional class wins by COPO cars and COPO-powered cars there.
  • Chevrolet's February 2015 history of Camaro engines claimed the base V-6's 323 hp was more than any Camaro V-8 offered between 1971 and 2000, a comparison that holds only on net ratings, and that the 2012 ZL1's 580 hp remained the most powerful engine in Camaro history. It put the low at 88 hp, the 1982–86 four-cylinder.
  • In a February 2015 design retrospective Tom Peters, Camaro exterior design director and himself the owner of a 1969 Camaro, said the return of the car after an eight-year absence was a thunderbolt for enthusiasts. He said the final design had to straddle a razor-sharp line between heritage and retro, and pointed to the rear-fender gills, the cross-car dual-plane grille and the hood's echo of the cowl-induction bulge.
  • Chevrolet announced on March 16, 2015, that the all-new 2016 Camaro would be revealed on Saturday, May 16, on Belle Isle in Detroit, in front of about 1,000 fans, with a display of the most significant Camaros in the brand's history and hot-lap rides in the 2015 Z/28. Camaro marketing manager Todd Christensen noted it was only the sixth time Chevrolet had introduced an all-new Camaro.

Interior trim

This table has 12 interior trims for 2015.

These choices follow Chevrolet's 2015 US brochure. LS cloth, 1LT/1SS Sport Cloth and 2LT/2SS leather appointments are separate offerings; the accent colors require their named packages. Upholstery ordering codes are not printed in the fabric chart and remain unknown. RECARO front performance seats are optional on SS and ZL1 coupes, and standard on Z/28. The 2015 matrix requires a Black interior for the 1SS RECARO option and explicitly says its rear seats remain cloth; 2SS requires Black leather appointments. The Z/28 fabric entry names the RECARO front seats separately. Neither year’s restrictions are used as a cross-year ordering-code crosswalk.

The Commemorative Edition

Chevrolet marked the end of the fifth generation with a Commemorative Edition revealed at the SEMA Show and on sale in spring 2015. It was offered on 2LT and 2SS coupes and convertibles and included the RS package. It added unique 20-inch wheels, an exclusive stripe, a body-color front splitter, the ZL1 rear spoiler and Commemorative Edition fender emblems, plus a body-color hood insert on SS models. Five color combinations were offered: Black or Silver Ice with a Cyber Gray stripe, Summit White or Ashen Gray with a silver stripe, and Red Hot with a black stripe. Inside was an exclusive Adrenaline Red and black leather interior with red stitching throughout, a flat-bottom steering wheel and special sill plates.

Marketing manager Todd Christensen said the fifth-generation Camaro "was a success from the moment it was introduced." Through October 2014, Chevrolet said, the Camaro was 10,000 sales ahead of the Mustang.

Four Camaros in one range

The final fifth-generation lineup ran from a commuter to a race car. The 323-hp 2LS V6 reached 60 mph in 6.4 seconds and returned 30 mpg on the highway; Chevrolet listed 5.9 seconds for the 1LS and LT Coupe. The 426-hp SS did 0–60 in 4.7 seconds with the manual. Its 1LE package added the FE6 suspension, a Tremec six-speed, a 3.91 final drive and 20-inch forged wheels on Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires, and Recaro seats were available. The 580-hp supercharged ZL1, whose magnetorheological shocks adjusted up to 1,000 times a second, lapped the Nürburgring in 7:41.27.

At the top was the Z/28, built around a hand-assembled 7.0-liter LS7 that Chevrolet called the most powerful naturally aspirated regular-production GM small block ever, at 505 hp and 481 lb-ft. Chevrolet announced a 7:37.40 Nürburgring lap for it in damp conditions (the 2015 brochure prints 7:37.47), on 19-inch forged wheels and Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. Car and Driver called it "America's track star."

Grip strong enough to turn a tire

The Z/28's grip created a problem Chevrolet had not expected. Its Pirelli Trofeo R tires and Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes could generate up to 1.5 g under braking. On track, engineers chalked a tire against the valve stem and found that after one lap it had turned at least a full circle on the wheel. Racers' abrasive bead paint was not enough, so the team media-blasted the wheels to give the tire a rough surface to hold. Program manager Mark Stielow said the brief had been simple: "We were told to build a fast car — period."

For its last spring Chevrolet also invited fans to name a special-edition SS in Emerald Green Metallic, announced on National Name Your Car Day in October 2014 and shown at SEMA. It carried the RS package, 21-inch Chrome Dusk wheels, a body-color hood extractor, ground effects, the ZL1 spoiler and Cyber Gray stripes. By then the Camaro had been its segment's best-selling car four years running.
