The twelfth and final year of the second generation, before the all-new 1982 F-body.
1981 closed out the second generation's unusually long twelve-year run with 126,138 cars built, ahead of the clean-sheet, all-hatchback 1982 third generation.
1979 remains the nameplate's best-selling model year on record; volume fell back through 1980–81 as both the market and the car aged.
